Gomla Market

The market from the glazed entrance, the hall opening up beyond.
Type
Retail — commercial interiors
Location
Egypt

A food market built under one gesture: a perforated vault running the length of the hall, with exposed steel, black tile and fluted timber below it. Retail is the hardest interior to photograph — every sightline is full of stock and signage — so the set was shot before opening, while the architecture still reads.

The entry hall under the exposed steel ceiling, tills to the right.
The escalator rising past a slatted timber wall lit from within.
The vaulted hall, its perforated ceiling running the length of the market.
The vault from the far end, timber ribs meeting the tiled floor.

The counters were photographed square on, the way a designer draws them, and the aisles in perspective, the way a customer meets them. The last frames are the materials: timber, tile and terrazzo meeting at a corner.

Daylight along the glazed side of the vaulted hall.
The fan of the vault opening over the entrance.
Terrazzo counter under a fluted timber canopy.
Preparation counter along the vault, shelving beyond.
The market in use, a customer crossing the aisle.
The delicatessen wall with its screens and hanging stock.
The same counter square on, glass cabinets lit from within.
The full run of the counter, timber and black tile.
Butchery counter under the cattle sign, tiled wall behind.

Butchery from the side, cabinets and screens lit.
Dried produce hung the length of the aisle over the tasting bar.

The same seating at dusk, the city beyond the glass.
Empty shelving in yellow steel, receding into the dark.
Yellow racking from the aisle end, ceiling services exposed.
Cured meats hung in rows against black tile.
Cheese and charcuterie stacked on the wall shelving.
Detail: timber, black tile and patterned floor meeting at a corner.
